Chess Tournament Finally Over

Standard

I got 2 1/2 points at the just finished millionaire Juniors tournament which was held for 3 days in Nairobi Kenya. It was great and I got to meet new people, and also  got their phone numbers. Some of the kids asked my coach if he could organize to  play a friendly game. Which means I will be going to a lot more chess tournament in the future. Possibly while in Asia.

I had so much fun at the  chess tournament. It  is one thing that I really would like to do again. I was nervous at first but after the first day it was awesome!! 😀😀

The Adventures of Applying for a Thai Visa

Standard

Karibu

Woke up today with a zest to complete all visa forms for our Thailand visa.

So I called a taxi to take me to our friends house about 3 min away so I can print out all required forms to get our Visa.

Thailand Embassy requires almost all the same  documents required if you are applying for the visa from any country.

Passport, bank statement, flight itinerary, birth certificate, hotel confirmation in Thailand and KSH 4,000 ( that’s if you are applying while in Nairobi Kenya).

So as organized as I am, I had a brown envelope labeled with each of our names. ( Now remember for Americans you can enter Thailand without a visa if staying for less than 30 days, But if you are staying for more than 30 days then you must apply for your visa before arrival.  You can try to wait and apply for an extension but due to language barrier its advised that you apply while in your home country or before entry). In Nairobi it takes two days for your Thai visa to be issued if all the documents needed have been provided.

So while at my friends house was waiting on Marcus to download his Bank statement so I can add it to the forms and take it to the Thai embassy. But I guess America is still sleep….his bank account is not available at this moment…what a way to calm me down. I was all ready to complete all visa stuff today.

Well so all forms are filled out and just waiting on America bank to wake up so we can call them and get his bank statement downloaded and printed.

Below is how we roll when it comes to applying for our visa for any country we travel too that requires a visa.

I feel like I am becoming a visa applying agent. Learning all the ways to do it right when it comes to visa’s.

First Chess Tournament For Manns Girls

Standard

It has really been a very great weekend.

Today after dropping kids off at their final day for the Millionaire chess tournament, Marcus and I met at Junction Mall at art cafe and had a very lovely breakfast.  I was able to pick up some breakfast ideas from Marcus. After sharing his thoughts on how I can spike up his breakfast….funny the universe decides to answer his prayers and when his breakfast came to our table it was exactly what he had wanted. The law of attraction….. it works so try it.

After our tasty breakfast we returned home while Marcus took and nap and I decided to just relax with MJ around the house.

At 3 pm we got a call from the kids that we can come and pick them up. So we went to KICC to pick them since today is their last chess tournament game. And they all did so well. For first timers in a tournament and also only being training less than 2 months. We all made them aware we are very proud of their achievement. pictures are below, girls with their Chess coach.

After we decided to treat the girls to a pizza date out. As a family we usually try not to eat out too much and pizza is not our first choice of meal to have. So today since they have done so so well we just decided to let them have Pizza which is every kids dream food right?

So we walked to a pizza place very close to KICC and had a tasty pizza and on our way to the restaurant we saw cold stone creamery…..yes that’s right… cold stone creamery all the way in  Nairobi Kenya East Africa…

So after dinner we went to the closing ceremony of the chess tournament and waited for the girls to get their certificate. It was very emotional for me with all the opportunities our kids are getting. And I was so proud of them.

After the closing ceremony we walked back to cold stone creamery and had some well deserved ice cream.

Then we returned home and the kids had only 20 min. to bath and write in their journal and get ready for a family movie night…..and what a better movie to watch than the new Annie movie.

A very beautiful day and an amazing weekend…..

See you back tomorrow

Trip to the 2nd Largest Slums in The World, Kibera Nairobi

Standard

On this day….coming from Ghana I thought we had slums…so I was not too excited about the journey ( I was under the impression that Kibera is like Nima, a community in Ghana).

The Journey started at the Java cafe at Junction Mall where we got to meet our host who was taking us there. Very fun and exciting lady she was.

She gave us some papers and asked that we learn a basic song that we can sing while visiting the place. So we did and it was interesting because the song was in Swahili language which my family and I have no idea how to even start a conversation with anyone.

So after the song learning moment we left and headed to Kibera, it was not very far from all the luxury apartments at all….It was a shocker to us how close the slums are from this nice places.

When we got there we had to be accompanied by an armed police officer ( now in Ghana you don’t have to have a armed officer accompany you to Nima ) So that was a weird feeling for us . And when I asked why they said because its not a safe environment for foreigners to be in.

So the journey began and we walked about 25 min to the exact location which was a school that has 500 kids for a building that I think should only have 50 kids. I was very sad and at the same time very grateful for my blessings.

while there our girls taught the kids at the school some basic self defense moves and also we got to speak and motivate them that this should not be their future….they must dream big and shoot for the sky.

One thing my family and I noticed was that this kids are happy and smiling all over the place and very content with their current situation.

Oh and most of this kids don’t have a home, their parents died and so the lady who opened the school has made it like a home. about 100 kids in a room, its the size of my 3 kids bedroom. It brought tears to our eyes and my girls got to see what life could be. But this children at the school are very grateful with the little they have. Also found out some of the kids have HIV and staying there is much better because they can be taking care of.

One of the ways the lady who opened the school is able to support the school was to train the older girls some sewing skills. And so all the kids uniforms are sewn in the school and also they have a small shop that they sell the things that they sew. So I decided to make a nice shopping day out of it. I bought a couple of African handmade skirts and also some bags.

After our tour around the small compound filled with so many lovely kids our host at the school had prepared some Kenyan dishes for us to have for lunch. Truly grateful for that.

It was a trip that we really enjoyed and will always remember.

If you do visit Nairobi please find a way to visit Kibera you will love the journey through the slums

Getting around in Nairobi

Standard

Well with us travelling and not spending a whole lot of time in each country we decided to just use local transportation while in Nairobi and in the other countries we visit.

So before we arrived in Nairobi I decided to research on the best way of moving around.

They have what is considered the cheapest ride which is the Matatu ( its a 8-12 passenger van that everyone going towards the same direction will get on and can get off when they reach their destination so like a shared ride). Now I have not tried riding that one yet because in my home country Ghana we have it also and its called Trotro, and I have being on them before so not so much of an excitement to get on while in Nairobi. And also they drive recklessly. So all the best if you decide to try it out.

The next one that is very new to me is called Border Border and basically its a bike rider. its very very reasonable and with the traffic in Nairobi it actually is a fun and nice ride for short distance. They charge around KSH 100 ( $1) for most short distance trips. And they give you helmet and a reflector to put on…. I like that because it gets me to my destination faster….

Then there is Easy Taxi, its an app that you can download and you request for a ride. ( I think they can do better with the App) But I used it for a while and still uses it on and off. prices are minimum of $3 for all short distance. But the drivers seem never to be available when you need them. And I end up cancelling a lot of my taxi ride that I request. and also even though the easy Taxi tariff is on the app the drivers still try to negotiate because after the trip you pay them directly. with us not having our own car going to short distance and paying $3 all the time can add up so the border border is our best option without the kids.

The other option is just a regular Taxi that is not registered with easy Taxi. But their prices are almost the same, but with regular taxi you can negotiate with the driver. So what I do is that I check the tariff on easy Taxi then when I pick the regular taxi I am able to negotiate to a reasonable price.

Then the more fancy option which we usually will take  when Marcus and I are on a date night because the cars are much nicer and the drivers are more knowledgeable. its UBer Taxi. We used UBer a lot while in Cape Town but In Kenya we realized its time to find a cheaper route. And with Uber we had to use a credit card which was also being charged international fee. so for a trip that cost us $3 now will have to charge another fee for international usage of the credit card. And we wanted to use our debit card but Uber does not allow debit card usage. So that’s why we only use UBer for our date nights just to have a more romantic evening in a nicer ride…

Now If you are coming to Nairobi, one advice I will give you is make sure from the airport Change your cash, buy a new phone chip ( its like $5 or less) and load your cash onto MPESA. That will save you some stress because in Nairobi everyone from the road side coconut seller to the high end hotels all accepts MPESA. It’s like having your money saved on your phone. its safe and very reliable money exchange services

2nd Handing Clothing Adventure in Toi Nairobi

Standard

So many are probably wondering what would I be doing at a 2nd hand clothing market when my kids are suppose to be playing a chess tournament this weekend.

Well after I dropped the girls off at their chess tournament, mommy had to find something to do. So I decided to take a trip to Toi market which is a place in Nairobi that sells used cloths. I did not expect to find anything worth buying or my time. But I was shocked…..it was packed with people everywhere and lots of foreigners.

So I went down to and started a journey that took me 2 days trip to Toi market….LOL!!! don’t blame me, I am a woman and still got a little bit of shopping genes in me.

Clothing at this market was barely used. And absolutely great bargaining prices. I bought a Norman Jones coat for Ksh 1,000 which is about $10.50. You know what that means to me, especially  having 5 kids….it means keeping looking around for great deals.

I left there and spent about $70. bought 5 designer brand coats, 4 sweaters for my son, 6 pair of jeans for the girls, and some cardigans for myself. I literally had bags of cloths that was so much cheap than I could have imagined. And they are barely used. Oh!! and this people at the market they wash and iron the cloths before selling them, as least from the place I bought mine.

So if you are in Nairobi Toi market is a place to quickly check out and grab something that you left at home. So if you read through my other blog remember you can visit toi market also for your reasonably priced fruits and veggies….SO TOI all the way

So after our Toi Market trip I enjoyed it so much I decided to go again the next day after dropping the kids off at their chess tournament and spent about 5 hours there again.

My weekend was defiantly a weekend to remember

Aasha first day of chess tournament

Standard

hey everyone today was the first day of the chess tournament.

I was quite nervous but even though I did not win any of the three games we have got 2 more days and 4 more games.I learned so much from today than I think I would have if I had won. Thanks to our coach uncle Brian (we call him Uncle B.) he helped me learn from my mistakes. It was really chilly out there so just in case you go to a tournament in kenya during raining season remember to bring a lot of coats :)😁 . Anyway so I got more confidence and patience in my games which I am positive will help a lot in tommorows section of the tournament. I got interviewed by citizen news (I think it was called) and will be on news tonight if you watch it please tell me how it could have been better.

Will be back on soon… and remember it is better to lose and learn something that can help you grow (kiazan) than to win and gain a trophy that will just sit on your desk.😀😀👍🏼

Bikram Yoga in Nairobi

Standard

image

Our family is all about experiences and adventure.
When we arrived in Nairobi one of the first things we did was to find a yoga studio.
And this studio is awesome. Great people and clean studio.
For those who don’t know what Bikram Yoga is, it’s a 90min yoga done in a very very Hot room. With 26 moves total you get to stretch and meditate all in one.

When a parent sign on the kids under 18yrs old practice for free. So there you go we are well on our way to becoming the Yogi family.

We practice Yoga 5 days a week. Super fun for the whole family.
If you visit Nairobi and stay in Lavington don’t forget to check out the bikram Yoga studio.

Namaste

Lavington Nairobi Kenya

Standard

Karibu ( Swahili meaning “Welcome”)

Our first month in Nairobi was not easy to adjust to the environment. Especially coming straight from Capetown the city of buzzing activities.

We are staying in a great location, called Lavington. walking distance to the famous Junction mall and walking or bike riding distance to most activities. I personally think if you are just visiting Nairobi then consider staying around Lavington area.

After a few weeks we started our activities. We hired a chess coach who comes to our apartment 3 times a week to teach our family how to become master chess players ( as they say chess teaches you the way of life….Thinking ahead ). About 5 min drive from our apartment is the Lavington Green Mall that is where we spent most of our hours in the day.

We joined the Bikram Yoga class there which the whole family get to practice the art of peaceful moments and also being flexible. ( the saying goes “if you don’t use it you will loose it”). We practice Yoga as a family 5 days a week and so far everyone is enjoying the journey. We also signed our kids up for Gymnastics,  as you know  with kids jumping without any control can always make their day.

We have made great friends in Nairobi now and enjoying play dates and movies days with our new life long friends.

will be right back with more adventure
